# Should the net zero date stop being legally binding?

From [the UKJP’s manifesto](https://ukjp.org.uk/manifesto/), Energy: _The legally binding 2050 net zero date is removed, so that courts can no longer direct energy policy through it. Net zero remains an aim, with 2060 as its target date._

Are binding climate targets a safeguard or a straitjacket? Who should decide how fast Britain cuts emissions: Parliament, the courts, or the Climate Change Committee?

Any position may be argued here, including that the question is framed wrongly.
